I’m a Journalism and Communication graduate and like many other graduates, I wasn’t able to secure a job after finishing my journalism internship. The internship was the only job placement I could get in many media houses.

Many a time, I would work for one media house for more than I year with the hope of securing gainful employment. When things didn’t work out, I would quit and join another media house.

The cycle continued for years until I got another internship opportunity at a local media house. Office politics and abusive language, when taking orders from our bosses was the order of the day. Although I was an intern, I always wondered if this was the kind of place, I’d like to spend the rest of my life in.

Ok, let me explain.

A conflict between my producer and I ensued. The feud went on and on and things weren’t getting better. My producer devised a plan that he believed would drive me out of the media house. Many journalists at the company, who were on the payroll, hated writing for the company’s website and the weekly newspaper.

To make me feel small, my producer assigned me this new task. So, I started writing for the company’s website and their weekly newspaper. It was a blessing in disguise! I enjoyed each and every moment of it.

Within no time, the company started featuring my stories in their weekly newspaper. They started rewarding me for my featured articles, but the compensation was not worth my time.

Also, I hated office politics and working under managers who wanted me out. They did not want to hire me — they only wanted to use me in the name of acquiring experience.

You know what?

One day on a lazy afternoon, I decided enough is enough. I had just discovered that I was a good writer and I wanted to take advantage of my newfound skill. With several bylines in the company’s newspaper, I thought it was time to test the waters.

First, I wanted to apply for a job as a contributor to a local newspaper, but I didn’t want anything to do with office politics. I had had enough of it. An idea suddenly struck me, “why not write for a living?” But I was too green. I only knew that writers write and sell books for a living. I turned to Dr. Google for more advice.

Look:

First, I typed in: “does writing pay well?” Many search results appeared and I decided to narrow down the search query by typing in again, “does writing pay well in Kenya?” And that my friend, is how I learned about online writing.

To cut a long story short, I now earn a better income than most of my media colleagues — think I’m exaggerating? There is so much I can talk about the current job market and how university degrees have become worthless. But that’s another story for another day. I know most of you can definitely relate to that.

With that out of the way:
